If you have been making the same cheese toast for years, the cheddar between two slices of bread might start to seem boring. However, many countries around the world have their own versions of the humble cheese sandwich, some of which are far more sophisticated than ordinary grilled cheese dishes.
French Croque Monsieur
In France, the Croque Monsieur serves as an answer to the cheese sandwich—a rich combination of soft bread (pain de mie), Gruyère cheese, ham, and béchamel. Unlike a standard toast, the béchamel gives the sandwich a creamy layer, bringing it closer to a restaurant dish than a quick lunch. It can be baked or fried in a pan, and many French cafes serve it with an extra spoonful of béchamel.
For an even more luxurious version, a fried egg can be added on top, transforming the dish into a Croque Madame. The runny yolk adds another level of richness, making it a popular choice for brunch.
Mozzarella in Carrozza from Italy
Mozzarella in Carrozza might sound complicated, but essentially, it is an Italian cheese sandwich. Traditionally, it is made from stale white bread and mozzarella, then coated in flour, egg, and breadcrumbs before being fried in oil. The result is a crispy golden crust with melted cheese inside that remains gooey with every bite.
Italians often complement it with ingredients such as prosciutto, olives, basil, or sun-dried tomatoes, and serving it with Marinara sauce makes it an excellent appetizer.
Mexican Quesadilla
The quesadilla is a Mexican take on the cheese sandwich, where tortillas are used instead of slices of bread. The classic version includes only the tortilla and melting cheese, such as Oaxaca or Chihuahua, although Monterey Jack also works well. After the cheese melts and the tortilla browns, it is folded in half and cut into triangles.
One advantage of the quesadilla is its adaptability: it pairs well with beans, chicken, beef, mushrooms, peppers, and spinach. Serving it with salsa, guacamole, or sour cream turns it into a complete meal.
Alpine Cheese Sandwich
The Raclette cheese sandwich originates from the Alpine regions of France and Switzerland and centers around perfectly melted raclette cheese. Unlike most cheese sandwiches, the bread itself is usually not fried in a pan. Instead, the cheese is melted separately, traditionally over a fire, and then scraped onto a slice of bread.
At home, a similar effect can be achieved by placing slices of raclette cheese under the broiler until bubbles appear. Classic additions include ham and thin slices of apple, which complement the nutty flavor of the cheese.
Welsh Reddit
Welsh Reddit, sometimes called Welsh Rabbit, has existed since at least the 17th century and remains one of Britain's great cheese dishes. It is served open-faced, consisting of toast covered with a rich cheese sauce made from cheese, butter, and a small amount of beer. To enhance the flavor, mustard powder, Worcestershire sauce, paprika, and cayenne pepper are often added.
The sauce is thicker and spicier than a simple cheese topping, and it soaks into the toast, remaining wonderfully melted on top.
All five dishes deserve attention because they demonstrate how different cultures approach the same basic idea: bread and melted cheese. Sometimes it is topped with béchamel, sometimes wrapped in breading, and sometimes served open-faced with a beer-based cheese sauce. In any case, they remind us that a cheese sandwich can be much more exciting than an everyday grilled cheese toast.
