This reaction is linked to correspondence held by IOL, which indicates Parliament's intention to convene the leadership of Legal Aid SA and representatives of SALAWU after receiving a memorandum of claims from the union following a strike in June. In a letter to SALAWU, the Chairperson of the Justice and Constitutional Development Committee, Xola Nqola, stated that the committee believes the issues raised by the union warrant 'urgent attention for the proper functioning of the justice system.' The committee plans to organize a meeting between SALAWU and the leadership of Legal Aid SA as soon as its schedule permits. Parliament is currently on recess until August 3.

The parliamentary intervention occurred against a backdrop of apparent stagnation in contacts between Legal Aid SA and SALAWU. Legal Aid SA confirmed that the scheduled meeting with SALAWU on July 10 did not take place. Legal Aid SA stated: 'The meeting scheduled for July 10, 2026, did not take place due to events during the current process of interaction between the parties. Legal Aid SA remains committed to constructive engagement with SALAWU through appropriate established channels.'

Cancelled Events

The organization did not provide details about the events that led to the cancellation of the meeting but reported that details of future meetings will be communicated through appropriate procedures once confirmed. Furthermore, Legal Aid SA confirmed that a previously scheduled meeting on July 7 between its board of directors and the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development also did not take place.

Legal Aid SA clarified: 'The meeting between the Board of Directors of Legal Aid SA and the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development was cancelled due to other competing commitments of the Minister. Please note that we await a new meeting date from the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development.'

This dispute arose after a two-day protected strike in June, as negotiations on several labor issues, including retirement age, wages, workload, staffing, management, and labor relations, failed to reach an agreement.
