The new Mitsubishi Triton Bi-Turbo variant is now available in the South African market. With the introduction of this modification, the latest Mitsubishi Triton model has gained sufficient power to compete with the best-selling Toyota Hilux.
The Mitsubishi Triton 2.4 Bi-Turbo model, now sold in South Africa, is offered in one configuration at a price of R959,990. This price is R70,000 higher than that of the flagship single-turbo model, the Edition 46.
Despite the higher price, this three-turbo Bi-Turbo SUV is cheaper than competitors such as the Hilux 2.8 GD-6 Legend 4x4 (R999,900), Kia Tasman X Pro (R999,995), and Ford Ranger 3.0 TD V6 Wildtrak (R1,076,800).
The updated 2.4-liter engine develops 150 kW of power, which matches the power output of the Toyota Hilux's 2.8 GD-6. The torque is 470 Nm in the range of 1,500 to 2,750 rpm. This new variant surpasses existing single-turbo 2.4 DI-D models, which produce 135 kW and 430 Nm.
The dual-turbo system increases flexibility during daily operation: the smaller turbocharger provides quick response at low revs to combat lag, while the larger one supports high power gain at high revs.
The Bi-Turbo is available exclusively in the 4x4 version, with all power directed to all four wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission. The Super Select II 4WD system also includes a rear differential lock, allowing drivers to choose from seven driving modes.
The Bi-Turbo variant has also received several exterior enhancements, including roof rails, a stylized bar, and an assisted tailgate. The interior features a 9.0-inch touchscreen multimedia system and synthetic leather seats with unique woven tweed upholstery.
The Bi-Turbo is equipped with a full suite of active safety systems, including: Around View Monitor, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, lane departure warning, and rear cross-traffic alert.
The Triton GLS trim has also received some exterior improvements: chrome elements on various panels, including the front bumper decorative trim, door mirrors, and rear bumper, have been replaced with matte black metal, and 18-inch alloy wheels have been fitted.
Lerato Nonyana, Head of Product and Marketing at Mitsubishi Motors SA, stated that 'the Triton Bi-Turbo and the updated GLS represent the next step in the brand's commitment to providing vehicles designed to meet both business and lifestyle needs, and that meet the requirements of customers who need versatility, capability, and everyday comfort.'
The Japanese automaker Nissan has held a global premiere of its new SUV, the Nissan Tekton, in the Indian market. This SUV, equipped with a muscular design, modern technologies, and a premium interior, was released at a price of 10.49 lakh rupees (excluding taxes).
Essentially, the Tekton is a reworked version of the Renault Duster, but its appearance is inspired by the global Nissan Patrol model. Because of this, the company also positions it as a 'Baby Patrol'. Nissan has started official pre-orders for the Tekton, which can be placed through the company's official website and authorized dealerships. Vehicle delivery is scheduled for July 20, and the first 10,000 buyers will receive special financial benefits.
Regarding the exterior, the front of the car features a wide chrome grille, C-shaped LED headlights, a muscular body, recessed roof rails, large wheel arches, and a sporty skimming plate, giving it a commanding presence on the road. The rear of the Tekton is adorned with black-covered C-shaped LED taillights, lending it a premium look. The 'Majestic Himalayan Crest' element, finished in piano black, adds a sense of adventure.
The Tekton's cabin has also been designed very well. Users are given the option to choose the interior with various color schemes. The interior is upholstered in leather and soft materials and features a Japanese design style. Available options include a tritone interior, as well as accents in beige, burgundy, and rose gold.
Inside the SUV, there are two digital screens: one for multimedia and another as the driver display. The steering wheel has a three-spoke D-cut design, and the presence of an electronic shifter (fly-by-wire e-shifter) and a driver-oriented cabin enhances handling. The front seats are equipped with heating, ventilation, and lumbar support functions, ensuring comfort even on long journeys. Furthermore, a panoramic roof is provided to create an airy atmosphere in the cabin, and attention has also been paid to storage space.
With the second-row seats folded down, the user gets a total luggage volume of 700 liters, which the company claims is the largest in the segment, allowing for convenient placement of suitcases and bags. A high ground clearance of 212 mm, along with improved approach and departure angles, makes this SUV more suitable for driving on challenging road surfaces. Thus, the Tekton is considered suitable for both urban use and long family trips on the highway.
In the Indian market, the Tekton is offered exclusively with a turbocharged petrol engine, available in two variants. The first variant is the 1.0-liter turbocharged T160 engine, and the second is the 1.3-liter turbocharged T280 engine, which generates 163 horsepower and 280 Newton-meters of torque. The company notes that the smaller engine (1.0 L) will provide a fuel economy of 19.4 km/l, while the larger engine (1.3 L) will achieve up to 18.5 km/l. It is important to note that both engines use piston mirror coating, borrowed from the Nissan GT-R, which increases engine efficiency and performance.
The new Tekton is equipped with the 10.1-inch Tech-Link HD multimedia system and a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster. The system supports built-in Google connectivity, allowing users to utilize Google Maps, Google Assistant, and Google Play. In terms of features, the Tekton looks very rich: it includes a panoramic roof, dual-zone climate control, 48-color ambient lighting, Arcamis 3D sound system, wireless charging, smart air purifier, 360-degree camera, electric tailgate, and many other intelligent functions.
The standard configuration of the Nissan Tekton includes 6 airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors, speed limiter, rain sensor wipers, and over 40 safety features, as well as a high-strength steel body. Additionally, the vehicle offers over 17 ADAS functions. The ADAS safety suite includes advanced features such as adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, lane keeping, lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring, driver attention alert, road sign recognition, and 360-degree parking assistance.
The Nissan Tekton passed the Bharat NCAP crash tests and received a 5-star safety rating. In this test, the SUV scored 30.49 out of 32 in the adult safety category and achieved 45.00 out of 49.00 in the child safety category.
