Study shows mesoglycan weakly prevents lower limb vein thrombosis

Details of the Clinical Trial

The study was supervised by Giuseppe Camporese, an employee of the University of Padua. A total of 553 people participated in the experiment: 272 patients were assigned to the group receiving mesoglycan—a mixture of natural glycosaminoglycans—and 281 patients were in the control group, receiving placebo. All participants took the drug at a dosage of 50 milligrams twice a day for 12 months.

Results by Timeframe

After one year of observation, the frequency of superficial thrombosis recurrence, new deep vein thrombosis, and pulmonary embolism was 21.8 percent in the treatment group and 24.5 percent in the placebo group (with statistical significance p = 0.56). However, after 24 months, the cumulative effectiveness rate reached 30.6 percent in the mesoglycan group versus 42.5 percent in the placebo group (p = 0.043).

Impact of Physical Activity

A separate study, based on data from a British biobank, revealed a link between time spent sitting and an increased risk of death from cancer. It was found that every additional hour spent sitting increases this risk by an average of nine percent. Furthermore, replacing one hour of sitting with moderate physical activity can reduce this risk by 12 percent. These findings were also published in the journal PLoS Medicine.
