Joburg City takes steps to improve Avalon and Olifantsvlei cemeteries

Recent social media reports indicated serious operational difficulties, particularly on weekends, when both cemeteries suffered from traffic congestion and delays in cremation services.

Measures Taken by Officials

In response to the situation, Tapelo Amad, a member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Community Development, took steps with a commitment to implement necessary corrective measures. During a visit to the Olifantsvlei cemetery, Amad noted the immense pressure on the site, especially on weekends, when records show between 50 and 100 burials per day.

This high level of activity is exacerbated by ongoing roadworks along the Golden Highway and infrastructure modernization by Johannesburg Water at the Koodkoppies water treatment plant, leading to excessive traffic jams and dissatisfaction among many mourners. Furthermore, the MMC pointed out that some visitors create additional complications by parking vehicles improperly on the cemetery's internal roads, restricting movement for both processions and emergency services.

Service Improvement and Logistics

Regarding the Avalon cemetery and the Lenasia crematorium, Amad was informed about recent delays in the supply of gas required for cremation. Although these temporary supply interruptions affected operations, Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ) has implemented measures to minimize disruptions and quickly restore normal service levels.

Additionally, the city is in the process of installing clear signage for better navigation to guide families and funeral directors to specific burial sections and marked graves. Amad emphasized that these improvements are intended to optimize the experience of all visitors and ensure that mourning can take place with dignity and ease.

Police Escort and Support

To coordinate traffic management, Amad also announced that the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) will implement a special deployment plan for weekends to ensure a visible presence of law enforcement during peak funeral periods.

Amad stated: 'We recognize the emotional significance of these sites and understand the frustration of families when operational problems arise. Through these inspection visits, we have confirmed our commitment to working with JCPZ and our partners to implement practical solutions that improve traffic management, accessibility, and the overall experience for mourners.'

Public Reaction

In response to the latest intervention, community leader Pastor Melvin Petersen welcomed the efforts to solve the problems. Petersen had previously shared videos detailing the current difficulties at the two cemeteries. He noted: 'I recently shared videos of my experience at the Olifantsvlei cemetery and crematorium. The MMC visited it with their team; we thank the MMC for the quick action and response. It must be acknowledged that this was not taken personally, and that the MMC listens.'
