Kokand Expresses Interest in Joining UNESCO Media Literacy Initiative

According to the participants, participation in the MIL Cities initiative will provide a systematic framework for work aimed at developing digital skills, responsible use of information, and engaging youth, educational and cultural institutions, libraries, museums, mass media, and local communities. UNESCO representatives positively assessed the city's aspiration, noting that Kokand's rich historical and cultural heritage, educational traditions, and active public life create favorable conditions for promoting media literacy.

Plans and Directions of Work

It was emphasized that Kokand has the potential to implement modern UNESCO approaches in the areas of critical thinking development, digital competencies, responsible handling of information, and increasing resilience to disinformation. One of the key stages will be the development of the City Action Plan, which will unite the efforts of local authorities, educational and cultural institutions, libraries, museums, youth organizations, civil society institutions, and other interested parties.

Integration and Events

Participants paid special attention to the integration approach, which allows combining Kokand's current projects in culture, education, youth policy, tourism, and social development with UNESCO's international agenda on media literacy. The possibility of using museums, libraries, educational institutions, public spaces, and the city's cultural potential to hold educational and interactive events, primarily targeting youth, was also discussed. Furthermore, the parties considered the prospects of Kokand participating in the Weekly Global Media Literacy Week, which takes place annually from October 24 to 31, as well as World Cities Day, observed on October 31.

Next Steps

At the end of the meeting, participants confirmed their readiness to continue consultations, prepare the City Action Plan, and develop practical cooperation with UNESCO in the field of media literacy.
