Cold weather conditions will persist across South Africa on Monday. Isolated rain and thunderstorms are expected in the eastern provinces, while the South African Weather Service (SAWS) warns of severe thunderstorms in some areas of the Mpumalanga province.
General Weather Forecasts
Most of South Africa will face cold or cool weather on Monday. Forecasts predict precipitation and thunderstorms for the eastern provinces, while the central and western regions will remain predominantly dry.
According to SAWS data, there is a 30% chance of rain and thunderstorms over the southern Limpopo, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, most of Mpumalanga, and the eastern half of the Eastern Cape. The most intense rainfall is forecast for the eastern part of Mpumalanga, where the probability of rain rises to 60%.
Dry Regions and Warnings
In contrast, the Western Cape, Northern Cape, North West, and Free State, as well as the western parts of the Eastern Cape, should experience completely dry weather without significant rainfall. Nevertheless, SAWS has issued a Level 1 yellow warning for severe thunderstorms in some parts of Mpumalanga.
SAWS stated that 'Level 1 Yellow Warning: Severe thunderstorms leading to localized flooding of low-lying areas, roads, and bridges, as well as hail and destructive winds that may damage settlements and infrastructure.' The weather service advised drivers in affected areas to exercise extreme caution, as heavy downpours can sharply reduce visibility and lead to slippery roads or flash floods. Residents in vulnerable areas are also advised to remain vigilant regarding possible hail and strong winds.
Weather After Cold Weekend
These forecasts follow a very cold weekend across most of the country. On Sunday, cloudy conditions with isolated or scattered showers were observed in the eastern and southern coastal areas, while the rest of South Africa had variable cloudiness.
