In Hinduism, the Ashad Amavasya date, which falls on the new moon of the month of Ashad during the dark half of the lunar cycle, holds special significance. This year, since Ashad Amavasya coincides with Tuesday, it is also called Bomavati Amavasya, doubling its importance. According to calculations, this day will be observed on July 14, 2026. This day is considered exceptionally auspicious for performing ancestor worship (Tarpan), removing karmic defects like Kalsarpa, appeasing Marka Dosha, and engaging in charity.
Dates and Time of Ashad Amavasya
According to the Dik Panchang, the Ashad Amavasya date will begin on July 13 at 18:50 and conclude on July 14 at 15:14. The auspicious time for bathing and making offerings on this day is scheduled from 4:30 AM to 5:32 AM.
Rituals and Worship
Before sunrise, it is recommended to take a bath in a sacred river, water body, or water mixed with Gangajal, and then offer prayers to the Sun God. Next, facing south, one should perform Tarpan for ancestors using water, Gangajal, black seeds, milk, and Kusha in a copper vessel. After this, a lamp must be lit in the home temple. Since this is Bomavati Amavasya, Ganesha and Mark Deva are especially revered; it is advisable to recite the Hanuman Chalisa or Bajrang Baan. For the ancestors, vegetarian food should be prepared, and then an offering should be made on a bonfire of cow logs, adding ghee, kheer, and food. Some of the prepared food should be given to animals—cows, crows, dogs, ants, and Brahmins, as according to beliefs, ancestors come in the form of crows or other shapes to accept food.
Charity and Significance of the Day
Donations made on the day of Amavasya bring unforgettable deserved blessings. On this day, one can donate grains and water such as wheat, rice, satwa, or seasonal fruits, as well as items like black seeds, umbrellas, slippers, or cotton clothes.
Spiritual Significance of Amavasya
For people whose natal chart contains Pitr Dosha, performing Pinda Dana, Tarpana, and giving food on Ashad Amavasya is considered an effective remedy. This allows dissatisfied ancestors to find peace and bestow blessings of prosperity and happiness. From an astrological perspective, Shani Deva rules Amavasya. Worshipping Ganesha on this day helps reduce the influence of Sade Sati and Dhaiya Shani, and also brings relief from the adverse effects of Rahu-Ketu and Marka, due to the coincidence with Tuesday.
