Brendon McCullum has been removed from the position of head coach of the England Test team following a string of failures and off-field incidents. Despite leaving this role, he will retain leadership of the national team in the limited overs format.
Reasons for dismissal
According to the CEO of England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), Richard Gould, the match results made his position with the 'red balls' unacceptable. England lost seven of the last nine Test matches under the former New Zealand captain. These losses include the humiliating Ashes defeat by 4-1 in Australia during the 2025/26 season, as well as a recent 2-1 home victory for New Zealand over England. Both tournaments were marred by allegations of an alcohol culture within the team.
Comments and past
McCullum stated in an ECB release that he greatly enjoyed coaching the Test team and is proud of what was achieved together. He added that while he regrets not continuing, he respects the decision made. Previously, England captain Ben Stokes announced his international retirement during the final match of the series against New Zealand at Trent Bridge, which marked the end of McCullum's tenure in Test cricket.
Start and problems
McCullum's tenure began impressively: Stokes led England to 3-0 series wins against New Zealand and in Pakistan, where 500 runs were scored in a single day, as well as a thrilling 2-2 Ashes series win at home in 2023. However, the 4-1 losses in India and Australia demonstrated the limitations of England's 'one size fits all' approach. Following a successful start in the series against New Zealand, off-field issues led to Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson being excluded from the second Test match after curfew violations at a London bar.
Search for new leadership
England is now searching for a new coach and captain for the upcoming home series against Pakistan. After the Ashes, Gould cautioned against a football-style management approach involving frequent changes of coaches. Nevertheless, on Sunday, praising McCullum for 'inspiring a new life' in the Test team, Gould stressed that the results did not meet expectations. He noted that business is always based on results, and McCullum knew this. Gould insisted on the need for change, given that 10 Test matches are scheduled between the present time and next year's Ashes in England.
Other aspects and candidates
The only remaining Test team leader from the trio including Stokes and McCullum is England's Managing Director, Rob Key. The announcement came the day after the England white-ball team topped the T20 rankings after a crushing victory over India in Southampton, thereby securing the T20 World Cup title with a 4-0 scoreline. McCullum, aged 44, focused his attention on white-ball cricket as he took up the limited overs coaching role in 2024. For a long time, there have been calls for Andy Flower to return as England coach. The great Zimbabwean cricketer managed the team from 2009 to 2014 and oversaw three successful Ashes campaigns, including the last away success in 2010/11. However, Flower is currently serving as the coach for the IPL team Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
