The health of educator and eco-activist Sonam Wangchuk deteriorated on Sunday as his indefinite hunger strike at the Kokrach Janta Party (CJP) protest site in Janthar Mantar Delhi reached its fifteenth day.
Health Status and Protest
Doctors reported a further drop in Wangchuk's blood pressure to 104/66 mm Hg and noted that he had lost 7.8 kg since starting the fast. A video published by Abishek Dipke, founder of CJP, with the caption '15th day of Sonam Wangchuk's hunger strike. When will the government wake up????', showed Wangchuk in a visibly weakened state, highlighting the severe impact of the prolonged fast on his health.
The overall protest at Janthar Mantar entered its twenty-third day on Sunday, while Wangchuk completed the fifteenth day of his indefinite fast after joining the action on June 28.
Planned Events and Support
The organization stated that several political leaders and social intellectuals were scheduled to visit the protest site during the day to express solidarity with the action. Former Kerala ministers K K Shylaja, K N Balagopal, and P Rajiv were expected to meet with the protesters, and Samajwadi Party MP Pushpendra Saroj was set to deliver a speech to the gathering.
The day's program was also scheduled to conclude with a public lecture by economist Jayati Ghosh on 'The Economy of Unemployment,' focusing on the employment crisis and its impact on youth.
Other Participants and Appeals
Members of the All India Students Association (AISA), affiliated with CPI(ML) Liberation, including Nehu, Manish, Dipak Kumar Verma, and Amin, continued their own indefinite hunger strike on a separate stage at the protest site.
On Saturday, Wangchuk appealed to people not to place him on a pedestal but to take responsibility as citizens. He stated in a video posted on X: 'Please do not look for a hero in someone else. Be the hero of your own life. Fulfill your duties as a citizen.'
He also called on people to participate in the planned march to Parliament on July 20, urging citizens to unite and demand answers from members of parliament regarding alleged irregularities in the conduct of examinations.
CJP Demands
CJP demands the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and compensation of 1 crore rupees to the families of students who allegedly committed suicide due to examination irregularities. The organization also announced a peaceful march to Parliament on July 20, which is the first day of the Monsoon Session.
The CJP protest began on June 20, and Wangchuk joined the action eight days later and has been on an indefinite hunger strike since then.
