Joshua Cheptegei, the Ugandan Olympic champion, confidently won the Absa Run Your City Durban 10K race on Sunday morning. He delivered an impressive performance, fulfilling his promise to delight the Durban fans with something special.
Race Results
The double Olympic champion finished in first place, completing the distance in 27 minutes and 19 seconds. This time was only three seconds slower than the record of all South African participants, which he set at the same race eight years ago. Salem Kibet from Kenya finished second with a time of 27 minutes and 29 seconds, while Emmanuel Kibet from Uganda completed the podium in third place with 27 minutes and 32 seconds.
Other Participants and Strategy
Title defender Kabelo Mulaudzi took sixth place among South Africans, finishing in 28 minutes and 06 seconds, despite hamstring issues that arose around the 7th kilometer. Before the start, Cheptegei spoke about the need for leading rivals to work together to approach the unattainable barrier of 27 minutes on African soil. In the initial stages, this strategy seemed achievable, as Cheptegei, Salem Kibet, and Felix Masai maintained pace until the middle of the race, while Mulaudzi gradually fell behind the leaders.
Finish and Champion's Comments
However, as the finish approached and the pace slowed, Cheptegei decided to accelerate. A decisive surge after the 7th kilometer allowed the 29-year-old athlete to pull away from his competitors, and he then increased his lead in the final kilometer, securing a convincing victory. After the race, Cheptegei stated: 'I still have a lot of speed over 10 kilometers.' He added that the atmosphere was excellent, but he would be happy to run a time around 26 minutes, perhaps next time.
Future Starts Prospects
Cheptegei admitted that he realized too late that the ambitious goal of breaking the 27-minute mark was slipping away, which prompted him to add fresh pace to please the thousands of spectators in Durban. He noted that achieving a time of 26:30 or 26:40 requires something exceptional. He also expressed satisfaction with the organization, stating: 'I really enjoyed the race. The organization is top-notch.'
