Chatsworth Secondary School Director Appeals for Help Over Illegal Dumping Near Educational Institution

The director of Chatsworth Secondary, Alvin Reddy, used social media to draw attention to the deplorable condition of the area surrounding his school, caused by illegal dumping.

Sanitary Threat Issue

This week, Reddy posted a video showing piles of trash along the school fence, which sparked outrage and an urgent call for intervention from the eThekwini municipality. In the video, the director stated: 'Good morning. I am the director of Chatsworth Secondary. This is the state of my school outside the walls.'

He reported that residents of the informal settlement of Emanyaleni previously disposed of waste elsewhere. However, after the area was cleared and trees were planted, residents began dumping waste near the school wall. Reddy clarified that due to the large volume of trash, it is scattered along the roadside and near the school entrance. Since the settlement's residents have no other place to dispose of waste, they cross the road and dump it right next to the school.

Ineffectiveness of Cleanup Efforts

Reddy stated that after filing a complaint, Durban Solid Waste sent personnel to clean up the trash. The problem is that after the cleanup, the garbage is packed into bags, but they are not removed. When the bags remain in place, vagrants and drug addicts passing by open the bags and rummage through the trash, leaving behind a new trail of dirt.

He called on the eThekwini municipality to provide informal residents with a waste disposal site to stop the dumping near the school. Despite reporting the dumps to officials, no action has been taken.

The director emphasized that there is an unbearable smell near the school, and his office smells like a dump. On Sunday night, someone set fire to the trash, requiring the fire department to be called to extinguish the fire, which damaged trees and burned the wall. Furthermore, last week, a high-profile guest was forced to walk past a used sanitary pad discarded near the school, which is humiliating and poses a health risk. Reddy added that they are looking for a permanent and constructive solution, but no one can offer it.

Municipality's Response

On Friday, a representative from the eThekwini Municipality, Mandla Nsele, stated that the Waste Management Department had cleaned up the illegally dumped trash in the area. Nevertheless, he noted that despite regular cleanup operations, these spots are often used again for illegal dumping shortly after being cleaned. Nsele stressed the urgent need for greater environmental responsibility and community cooperation.

He also pointed out that illegal dumping remains a city-wide problem requiring joint efforts from the municipality, residents, businesses, and community stakeholders. The municipality continues to implement various measures, including regular cleaning, awareness campaigns, and responsible waste management initiatives. Residents are urged to only put out trash on the scheduled collection day and refrain from illegal dumping. The municipality is ready to work with schools, community leaders, and other parties to find practical solutions, as creating a cleaner and safer environment is a shared responsibility.
