Will Jordan, a winger for the All Blacks team, scored a hat-trick, thereby setting a new record for New Zealand's number of goals during the Nations Cup match against Italy.
Match Progression and All Blacks Dominance
In a fast-paced Nations Cup match held on Saturday, the All Blacks team defeated Italy with a score of 47-17. The New Zealand team overcame a sluggish start and scored seven goals, securing their second win out of two in the debut 12 Nations tournament under head coach Dave Rennie, following a 34-32 loss to France last week.
Player Losses and Turning Point
The home team was leading 14-10 after a slow first half, but in the third quarter of the game, they became more active, scoring four points after Italy was reduced to 14 players.
Italian hopes were sharply diminished when lock Niccolò Cannone received a yellow card ten minutes after halftime for a header against New Zealand's scrum-half Kame Roigard. Match officials later upgraded the sanction to a red card, as reviewers deemed the action extremely dangerous and without mitigating circumstances.
Jordan's Record
Two of these goals were scored by Jordan, which raised his career international tally to 50 goals in 56 matches—one goal more than the previous record holder, former winger Doug Howlett.
The visitors' misfortunes were compounded by a series of injuries, including an alleged chest injury to veteran fullback Tommaso Allan, who had to be substituted after a lengthy medical timeout.
First Half and Second Period
Italy initially showed promise when midfielder Tommaso Menoncello scored in the third minute, concluding a breakthrough attack that he initiated by breaking through Billy Proctor's tackle attempt and exchanging precise passes with Malik Faysal.
New Zealand equalized at 7-7 when lock Sam Darcy broke through, and then the visitors temporarily took the lead from a penalty kick by Allan. Jordan scored in the thirtieth minute, giving New Zealand a slight advantage before halftime after a tense 40 minutes in which they struggled to break through the stubborn Italian defense line.
However, New Zealand's brutal four-goal onslaught in the first 14 minutes of the second period completely shattered the Azzurri's hopes for a first test defeat against the All Blacks in 18 attempts. The first two goals were scored by Roigard and loosehead prop Ethan de Groot, both scoring after excellent work by substitute winger Josh Murphy in his debut match. Then Jordan scored twice consecutively to cement his record hat-trick, after which the home team added another point in the final minute thanks to a goal by lock Tupu Va'a. Italy's only consolation goal in the second half was scored by substitute back Leonardo Marin.
Upcoming Matches for Both Teams
Next weekend, the New Zealand team will play Ireland at Eden Park in Auckland, while Italy, which lost to Japan 27-10 last week, will travel to Perth to play Australia.
