Discussions about the composition of the Indian squad for the T20 series against England continue to intensify, especially in light of the choice between Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Sanju Samson. Former Indian wicketkeeper Parit Patel made a strong statement regarding these two players.
Parit Patel's Stance
Patel believes that giving a chance to 15-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi might be an emotionally justifiable decision. However, if selection is viewed purely based on logic and results, his exclusion of Sanju Samson seems inexplicable. In an interview with 'GeoStar', he noted that in Sanju Samson's career, the same question—his consistency—has constantly been raised over the last 11 or 12 years.
He pointed out that Samson was often excluded from the team previously due to a lack of consistent runs or a slow pace of play. Nevertheless, Patel argues that one cannot judge a player by different criteria. He added that while the chance given to Vaibhav Suryavanshi can be called an emotional choice due to his great talent, the absence of clear grounds for excluding Samson, if selection were based solely on performance metrics, casts doubt on the decision, suggesting it was made based on emotion.
Vaibhav's Unsuccessful Attempts
When 15-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi first earned a spot in the Indian T20 team, Sanju Samson failed to score big runs in three matches during the T20 World Cup. The selectors then bet on the young player, focusing on the future, but as of now, Vaibhav has not managed to significantly influence the trust placed in him.
Currently, the Indian team is losing the five-match series against England by a score of 0-3, with the fifth and final match scheduled for Saturday.
Cricket Fans' Mindset
Parit Patel also commented on the mentality of cricket fans. In his opinion, in Indian cricket, there is often a belief that the player who was dropped from the team is the best option. He gave an example: during the last T20 World Cup, when Shreyas Iyer was not playing, everyone asked why he wasn't chosen. Now that he has returned to the team, people say that Rajat Patidar should get the spot. This notion that the dropped player is better always persists.
Patel's statement came amid ongoing debates in the cricket community regarding Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Sanju Samson: on one hand, the preparation of young players considering the future is discussed, while on the other, selection criteria based on current form and experience are questioned.
