Uncertainty surrounds the future of Hugo Broos following his announcement of departure, although his employer maintains that his contract remains valid. Meanwhile, the search for a successor to the Belgian coach is actively underway.
Search for a new team leader
Pinto Mosimane is being considered as the main candidate to replace Broos, as he has stated his readiness to lead the national team in a new era. If this appointment materializes, it will mark Mosimane's second tenure leading the Bafana Bafana after a disappointing two-year period in his career.
It is expected that Mosimane or any other successor will bring their own technical staff to ensure shared values, trust, and camaraderie within the coaching staff in the future.
Retention and changes in the staff
Despite the upcoming changes, Helman Mkhalele has received strong support to retain his position as assistant coach, which should ensure a smooth transition and preserve the foundations laid by Broos over five years of his service.
However, besides Mkhalele, significant departures from the Bafana technical staff are anticipated and confirmed. Some staff members either failed to fully execute their duties in recent months or remained with the team only due to Broos' influence.
Departure of Vincent Tséki
Reports indicate that Tséki's tenure as the Bafana team manager ended after the World Cup, and he left amid scandals that nearly cost the team a spot in the tournament.
Tséki first attracted public attention by receiving a red card during a heated dispute with the Liberia coaching staff during an Afrocon qualifier match in Liberia before the postponed 2023 tournament. The football administrator then came under further scrutiny and harsh criticism after allowing the ineligible Teboko Mokone to play in the World Cup qualifier against Lesotho. This error resulted in Bafana losing three points and suffering a technical defeat by a score of 3-0.
The problems were not limited to this. Tséki was also widely accused of visa difficulties encountered by the squad before traveling to America, leading many to believe that his continued presence at the tournament would bring more harm than good.
Decision of Sinepso Mali
Mali announced his resignation as the team performance analyst after the World Cup. This news was met with approval from some fans after his relationship with Bafana supporters deteriorated, despite the team's historic qualification for the playoffs.
Mali and his analytical team faced heavy criticism for Bafana's 2-0 loss in the first World Cup match. Critics argued that they provided Broos with incorrect data regarding Mexico (El Tri), which led the team to adopt an overly defensive and timid tactic.
After Bafana adjusted its tactics later in the group stage—drawing with Czechia and then defeating South Korea to qualify for its first playoff—Mali stood up to his critics, stating: 'They talk too much at home, but we know what we are doing here!' These comments seriously damaged his reputation among the public, prompting some fans to direct insults and even threats towards his family. Later, Mali took full responsibility for his emotional outburst and offered extensive apologies to the country.
