China has unveiled its new generation of high-power microwave (HPM) weaponry, which has surprised the global community. According to Chinese defense scientists, this weapon is capable of generating microwave energy with a power of up to 100 gigawatts (GW).
Technology Potential
Experts believe that this technology could fundamentally change the nature of future electronic and space warfare. This information was disclosed by scientists from the National University of Defense Technology (NUDT) in a research paper published this month. This is the first instance where the Chinese military has revealed such detailed information about its high-power microwave weapons program.
Progress in Pulsed Power Technology
Scientists note that China has made significant progress in pulsed power technology in recent years and is now among the leading countries in this field. China also stated that it has tested this weapon.
Characteristics of the 100 GW System
According to the report, China has developed microwave weapons of various powers, some of which have already been transferred to the armed forces. The most powerful system has a potential of 100 GW and uses the operation of several high-power pulse generators to create an extremely powerful microwave beam. Specialists warn that using this technology as anti-satellite weaponry poses a serious threat to expensive satellite networks in low Earth orbit, such as Starlink. It is generally believed that even a 1 GW microwave pulse can cause serious malfunctions in a satellite's electronic systems, while a 100 GW system could be far more destructive.
Lithium-Ion Capacitor-Based System
The study also presented a new hybrid solution based on lithium-ion capacitors. This system is capable of instant activation and providing continuous power even at minus 40 degrees Celsius. This will enhance electronic warfare capabilities in cold and polar regions. China plans to make this technology more compact, accessible, and precise for easy deployment on various military platforms in the future.
