Former Prime Minister Jorge Bom Jesus announced the withdrawal of his candidacy for the presidential elections in São Tomé. This decision was made after careful reflection on the current political scenario, motivated by personal reasons and the conviction that defending his honor and protecting the physical and moral integrity of his family and supporters should be priorities.
In his statement, Bom Jesus explained that despite accepting the challenge of running with the goal of serving the people of São Tomé, strengthening democratic institutions, and promoting a project of hope and national unity, the current political circumstances led him to reconsider. He mentioned a context marked by unprecedented political divisions and tensions, which led him to conclude that withdrawing was the most responsible and patriotic action to contribute to national appeasement and concord.
It was recognized that the withdrawal occurred outside the stipulated legal deadline, which allows for the admission of resignation up to 24 hours before the drawing of the voting order. However, his representative, Gilson Leite, clarified that from this moment on, Jorge Bom Jesus will not present himself to the electorate as a candidate, nor will he participate in campaigns, rallies, or awareness meetings.
A week ago, the former prime minister had reaffirmed his candidacy for the presidential elections on July 19, refuting withdrawal announcements made by his own party and expressing support for the re-candidacy of President Carlos Vila Nova. On that occasion, he met with the leadership of MLSTP and other candidates, including Carlos Vila Nova, to discuss electoral issues, such as financial matters, but rejected any proposal of withdrawal or receipt.
On that day, the president of MLSTP, Américo Barros, expressed regret over Jorge Bom Jesus' behavior, stating that he had proof that the former prime minister had declared he would withdraw, and awaited a public redemption. According to the MLSTP leader, Jorge Bom Jesus intended for the communication to be made by the party due to commitments with investors, thus avoiding disclosure by the press in the first person. With this withdrawal, four candidates remain: Eugénio Rodrigues da Trindade Tiny, Nito de Sousa Viegas D'Abreu, Miques João do Nascimento de Jesus Bonfim, and Carlos Manuel Vila Nova, who is a re-candidate.
According to the National Electoral Commission (CEN), the final data from the automatic electoral census indicate a total of 142,191 voters. Of these, 121,670 are located in São Tomé and Príncipe, while 20,521 are in the diaspora, distributed among five European countries (15,917) and four African countries (5,324).
