Next Safa leadership choice will determine the future of the South African national team

Hugo Broos has officially confirmed the end of his historic tenure as head coach of the Bafana Bafana national team. Nevertheless, the experienced Belgian tactician does not rule out the possibility of remaining in South African football in a different capacity.

End of Coaching Career

The 74-year-old specialist is leaving the post, becoming the longest-serving manager in Bafana's history. He took charge of the team in June 2021, and his successful five-year period led South Africa to an unprecedented FIFA World Cup playoff appearance.

Previously, Broos had stated several times that the 2026 tournament in North America would mark the end of his coaching career. However, after the team's heroic performance, doubts arose regarding the possibility of extending his stay.

Decision on Transition

Nevertheless, in an interview with the Belgian publication Voetbalnieuws, Broos firmly stated that his decision to step away from the demanding work of a coach is final. He emphasized: 'Will I continue working as a coach? No, it is irreversible!'

He added that if he needs help in other areas, such as scouting, that would be another matter, but football will no longer occupy all his time around the clock.

Opportunities in SAFA

Broos reported that he has already held preliminary discussions with the president of the South African Football Association (SAFA), Danny Jordan. Jordan is interested in the Belgian specialist continuing to collaborate closely with the national team as a senior consultant.

According to Broos, he has spoken with the chairman of the South African federation, who would like to keep him, but in a different function, such as an advisor. Broos plans to return at the end of July to say goodbye and eagerly awaits an offer from Jordan.

Personal Life After Sports

Despite the elite coaching work being behind him, Broos joked that his wife warned him that retirement does not mean spending all free time at home. He mentioned that his spouse is happy about his departure but has already cautioned: 'Just make sure you don't bother me!'

He concluded that if he has to come to South Africa for a few weeks every two months, it is acceptable, as it is better than being a burden at home due to lack of activity.

The honorary football coach and former assistant to the Bafana Bafana national team, Seme Letsosaka, advised Safa's management to keep Hugo Bruus in a consultative capacity for the coming months. This is necessary to ensure an unhindered handover of duties and a smooth transition to his successor.

Context of Bruus' Departure

Bruus' contract officially ended after the Bafana Bafana national team was eliminated from the current North American World Cup. Despite this, he achieved a historic qualification for the playoffs for the first time in four national tournament participations.

Due to this achievement and other successes, Bruus is considered one of Bafana's best coaches, comparable to the late Clive Barker, who won the Afrocop in 1996 and secured South Africa's first World Cup qualification in 1998.

Coach's Philosophy and Plans

Bruus' coaching work was built on following his own principles. He valued discipline and the club's form, completely ignoring the influence of agents, fans, media, and clubs. Given the strong ties he established with the team and the country, Bruus acknowledged that simply leaving, returning to Belgium to his family, and immediately retiring would be difficult.

Nevertheless, although he is willing to consider a less demanding role, such as a consultancy position, Bruus specified that he would not dictate terms to the new coach, who must have the ability to manage the team at his discretion.

Letsosaka's Recommendations

Speaking exclusively to Independent Media on Saturday, Letsosaka, who worked as an assistant to Bafana under Gordon Igesund from 2012 to 2014, supported Bruus' idea. He noted that this would help the progress and continuity of the team. Letsosaka suggested: 'If he leaves, make him something like a sporting director for two or three months.' He emphasized that it is not about telling the new coach what to do, but some form of handover is necessary, even if the new coach has their own ideas.

He added: 'The biggest problem in our country is that we always start from scratch. We never acknowledge the foundations that have already been laid. A new coach might come with their own staff, which means the current personnel could lose their jobs. In my honest opinion, let's keep some people who are already here.'

Importance of Retaining Staff

Letsosaka believes that one person who absolutely must be kept under the new regime is the current assistant, Helman Mkhalele. Bruus publicly supported Mkhalele as a candidate to replace him in order to maintain continuity.

'Helman must stay there,' stated Letsosaka. 'He has built good relationships with the players and the team. When the next coach arrives, Helman can ensure that the bridge between the players and the new coach is not too wide. Instead, it will be a bridge they can cross much faster.'

He warned that hiring a completely new coach with a totally new team would mean starting from scratch, and if this new coach fails, the blame will once again fall on the coaches.
