France captain Kylian Mbappé stated on Thursday that his team should not become complacent about their chances of winning the next FIFA World Cup, despite a confident 2-0 victory over Morocco, which secured them a place in the semi-finals.
Post-match comments
After the intense quarter-final match in Foxborough, Mbappé told French broadcaster M6 that while they were pleased with reaching the semi-finals, they still had a long way to go, and the upcoming challenges would be even tougher, but the team was ready for it.
He emphasized that, in his opinion, the only way to slow down was to win. Mbappé added that they were ready to face whatever came their way and planned to recover calmly to watch the next match and find out who their next opponent would be.
Injury and player substitution
Mbappé also participated in the goal scored by Ousmane Dembélé in the second half, which sealed 'Les Bleus'' victory at Gillette Stadium. However, he was later substituted due to a severe ankle sprain, making way for Jean-Philippe Mateta.
Regarding his condition, Mbappé assured fans: 'I am fine. I took a blow to the ankle, but I am fine.' He explained that he decided to leave the game because he felt Jean-Philippe was better prepared to play the last fifteen minutes.
Team's future plans
The captain expects to be able to participate in the semi-finals. France is heading to Dallas to play the winner of the tough quarter-final match between European champions Spain and Belgium, which will take place next Tuesday, July 14th.
Previously, France won its first World Cup trophy on home soil in 1998 and a second title in Russia in 2018, but suffered a painful defeat in a penalty shootout against Argentina at the 2022 tournament in Qatar.
