As Nissan South Africa concludes production at its Roslyn assembly plant, the company has handed over five significant vehicles to its most dedicated collector in the country.
Transfer of Brand Heritage
The manufacturer transferred these vehicles to Frikkie de Kock, a founder who is considered the owner of the world's largest private collection of Nissan and Datsun cars. This transfer ensures the preservation of some crucial Nissan models produced in South Africa for future generations.
The donation included models such as the Nissan Navara 'Hands that Build' (the first locally assembled Nissan Navara), the last produced Nissan NP200, the second-generation Nissan Leaf, the Datsun Go rally concept car, and the Nissan X-Trail e-POWER.
Significance of Each Model
Rami Mohareb, Head of Brand and Communications for Nissan Africa, noted that each vehicle reflects an important stage in the local history of the company. He explained that these models are iconic or unique because they were either manufactured in Roslyn or used at the plant for certification before being released into the South African market, as with the Leaf, or for feasibility studies, such as the X-Trail e-POWER.
Recognition of Collector's Contribution
Juan Wheeler, Country Director of Nissan South Africa, called the decision to transfer the vehicles to de Kock obvious. He emphasized that de Kock is not just fond of cars but is deeply passionate about the brand and its more than sixty-year history in South Africa. De Kock began collecting Nissan and Datsun models over twenty years ago and currently owns more than 200 vehicles, about 120 of which are in show condition and ready for operation.
His collection features iconic high-performance models such as the Nissan GT-R and Datsun 240Z and Fairlady, as well as rarer specimens, including the Datsun Safari—an early variant of the Patrol that served as a fire truck in Japan. Receiving these new exhibits was a special moment for him, and he expressed joy that his enthusiasm and dedication to the brand were recognized by Nissan South Africa through this generous gesture.
Historical Value of Recent Models
De Kock particularly highlighted the final Nissan Navara produced in Roslyn. He noted that receiving the last Navara, adorned with the fingerprints of the people who assembled it, alongside the NP200, the successor to the iconic Nissan 1400, holds special significance for him. Furthermore, he pointed out that the Nissan Leaf and X-Trail e-POWER demonstrate important milestones in Nissan's history, indicating the manufacturer's early leadership in electric mobility and alternative powertrains.
Mohareb added that thanks to de Kock's efforts in preserving and showcasing the brand's heritage, he has become an integral part of the Nissan family, acting as a wonderful brand ambassador who shares his collection at events across the country.
