The Israeli defense company Rafael Advanced Defense Systems is preparing to establish a production line for Iron Dome interceptor missiles in India. The company is currently negotiating with several Indian defense enterprises regarding this project.
Significance for India's Defense Policy
If an agreement is reached, the production of Iron Dome missiles will take place in India for the first time, outside of Israel and the United States. This initiative aligns with India's government policies of 'Make in India' and 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' (Self-Reliant India). India has long encouraged foreign defense companies to engage in local manufacturing and exports, which will not only strengthen its domestic defense industry but also enhance India's position in the global defense supply chain.
Current Production and Benefits
Currently, Iron Dome missiles are manufactured in Northern Israel, and there is a second production line operating in partnership with Raytheon in the USA. Launching a new production base in India will lead to reduced production costs, strengthened supply chains, and the ability to quickly meet global demand when needed.
Existing Bilateral Ties
A strong cooperation in the defense sector already exists between India and Israel. Both countries have jointly developed the long-range air defense system Barak-8, which is used by the armed forces, navy, and air force of India. Furthermore, India has developed its own short-range air defense systems.
Strategic Prospects of the Project
According to reports, global demand for air defense systems has sharply increased following recent conflicts in the Middle East. Under these circumstances, establishing Iron Dome in India will offer a strategic advantage to Rafael, as the company could export these missiles to other countries from India. Concurrently, India is working on developing its own air defense system similar to Iron Dome, named 'Sudarshan Chakra'. Thus, a potential partnership with Rafael could provide the Indian defense industry access to new technologies, manufacturing capabilities, and export opportunities.
If this project is realized, India will cease to be merely a consumer of Israeli air defense systems and will become an active participant in their production and global supply.
