The Casa Awasi is located on the island of Lombok, Indonesia, taking advantage of the region's rich cultural heritage, which complements its natural beauty. Lombok is home to the Sasak people, presenting a rich combination of traditions, customs, and arts, from complex handlooms and wood carvings to typical dances and music.
A Belgian couple, in their fifties and with experience in real estate and financial markets, decided to build their summer house in Lombok. After living their entire lives in Europe, they were looking for a retreat location for the colder months of the year. Their familiarity with the real estate sector allowed them to have a clear vision of the project and collaborate efficiently in developing ideas.
Considering that social gatherings are crucial for the couple, who enjoys hosting parties, playing pétanque, and having barbecues, the design process focused intensely on the fluidity of social spaces, ensuring a continuous connection between the communal areas. Furthermore, the careful selection of durable and high-quality furniture was essential to guarantee a welcoming and lasting experience.
Casa Awasi is inspired by the earthy tones of the surrounding environment, harmonizing with nature through the use of local stones, warm hues, and wooden panels that soften the building's contours. Every detail was executed by specialized artisans, using elm wood in the construction of brise-soleils, pergolas, and ceilings. The handmade panels mirror the name 'Awasi', a place in Patagonia where the family experienced memorable moments.
By integrating local materials in warm colors, the house blends into the landscape, contrasted by the straight and defined lines of the roof, which gives it a notable architectural character. Casa Awasi represents an outstanding example of design and craftsmanship, integrating perfectly into Lombok's cultural and natural setting.
