Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Australia, where he met with his Australian counterpart Anthony Albanese. During the visit, Modi signed forms for young cricketers and took a photo with Australia's official mascot, 'Ruby the Roo.'
Meeting with Sports and Political Figures
The stadium also hosted a meeting with Steve Waugh, former captain of the Australian men's cricket team. Speaking, Prime Minister Modi noted that cricket in both countries is not just a sport but a shared passion. He emphasized that on this day, the atmosphere was one of the joy of the game and warmth of friendship, rather than the pressure of the 'final over finish.'
Earlier, Modi held a meeting with Angus Taylor, the leader of the Australian opposition, where they discussed strengthening ties between India and Australia. In a post on X, he mentioned that the conversation with Mr. Angus Taylor was substantive, and he highly values the warmth and broad support their partnership receives in Australia.
Expansion of Strategic Partnership
On Thursday, India and Australia elevated their strategic alliance by adopting the Joint Declaration on Defence and Security Cooperation (JDDSC) and the Maritime Security Roadmap (MSCR). Furthermore, the sides agreed to implement their civilian nuclear agreement to facilitate uranium exports to India.
These two defense agreements were part of 18 key outcomes announced after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's meeting with his Australian counterpart Anthony Albanese during the Third Annual India-Australia Summit. The agreements cover defense, maritime security, energy, cyberspace, and critical technologies, education, mining, research, and cultural cooperation, indicating a significant expansion of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
Comments on Relationship Development
External Affairs Secretary Vikram Misri stated that the adoption of the JDDSC and the maritime roadmap reflects the necessity of adapting the bilateral partnership to changing geopolitical and strategic realities. According to Misri, these documents confirm that the partnership must evolve in line with changing strategic circumstances and demonstrate a commitment to advancing defense and security cooperation.
