China called for enhanced international cooperation following the launch of the Global AI for Good Summit 2026 on Tuesday at the Palexpo venue in Geneva.
Summit Goals and Participants
This flagship UN project will run until July 10th and will bring together governments, industry leaders, and international organizations. The event aims to examine how artificial intelligence is transforming various aspects of life, including healthcare, education, food security, and disaster risk reduction.
The Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), Dorin Bogdan-Martin, noted that the 'Geneva Digitalization Week' marks a shift 'from discussions to people-oriented action' in the field of AI. The summit is jointly sponsored by the ITU agency, the Swiss government, and over fifty UN partners.
Events Alongside the Summit
Parallel to the main event, the Geneva-based group 'Friends of Global Governance' held a seminar on 'AI for Good and Inclusive Development' on July 7th. More than 200 people from over 30 countries participated in this seminar.
China's Minister of Industry and Information Technology, Li Lecheng, stated that 'global AI governance requires more robust international cooperation.' Furthermore, China's Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva, Jia Guai, emphasized that inclusive AI development depends on a 'people-centric approach, openness, cooperation, and multilateralism.'
AI and Space Competition Results
On July 9th, the results of the first AI and space computing competition were presented at the summit. Chinese teams won gold medals in all three categories of this competition. The contest was launched jointly by the ITU, China's Zhejiang Lab, and the Chinese Academy of Information and Communications Technology, attracting 258 teams from 36 countries.
Zhejiang University of Technology won the award for food production monitoring; a team comprising representatives from Ningbo University and Earth-2 Space Technology won gold in water quality analysis; and Zhejiang Normal University received gold in urban heat island mapping. Academician Wang Jian, Director of Zhejiang Lab and member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, noted that researchers worldwide share a 'high degree of consensus' regarding global issues.
