2026 Index Results
The Global Liveability Index 2026 from The Economist Intelligence Unit was published this week and covered 173 cities, assessed based on various liveability parameters. Although the positions of Delhi and Mumbai remained unchanged compared to last year, ten Chinese cities managed to improve their ranking relative to 2025.
Regional Trends and Comments
The index showed that Western Europe continues to be the strongest region in terms of quality of life, although the average score for this region stagnated, while the average indicator for Asia demonstrated growth. The report notes that 'the Iranian war has undermined stability across the Persian Gulf.'
Shrikant Vishwanathan, CEO of Janaagraha, an organization dealing with urban governance issues, stated: 'A lower rating means we are becoming less attractive to global investors and talent—we need to make our cities stronger and more liveable.'
