Google announced a new gaming mode that will be incorporated into Android 17 in the coming months, focusing on smartphones with foldable screens. This feature allows half of the screen to be dedicated to a virtual controller, while the other half displays the game, increasing options for titles that support physical controllers.
The feature aims to offer a native solution within the operating system, eliminating the need for external accessories like Bluetooth controllers.
The mode can be activated before or after starting a compatible game and will be automatically disabled if a physical controller is connected to the device. The virtual controller will simulate commands from a traditional gamepad, including a digital directional pad, two virtual analog sticks, A, B, X, and Y buttons, triggers, and a start button. Furthermore, the system offers customization, allowing the user to adjust the positioning of the analog sticks, the size of the buttons, and haptic feedback.
