Women in Cape Verde dedicate significantly more time to unpaid work compared to men, according to observations made by the INE.
Differences in participation and time dedicated
The INE pointed out a notable disparity between the sexes, registering a higher participation rate among women (93.0%) versus men (76.7%), which represents a difference of 16.3 percentage points.
Regarding the amount of time invested, women spend an average of 19 hours per week on these activities, while men dedicate 10 hours.
Types of unpaid work
Among the various forms of unpaid work, domestic tasks emerged as the most common, involving a total of 303,160 individuals, corresponding to 80.9% of the population.
Another relevant activity was caring for dependent people within the immediate family unit, which mobilized 126,998 people, reaching a participation rate of 33.9%. In this specific aspect, 45.6% of women reported providing this care, surpassing the 22.2% of men.
Other forms of activity
Voluntary work was performed by 13,026 people, representing 3.5% of the population aged 15 or over. Additionally, production for self-consumption involved 55,784 people (14.9%), with this practice being more prevalent in rural areas.
The INE clarifies that the concept of unpaid work includes domestic tasks, assistance to children, the elderly, or dependent persons, voluntary work, and production for personal use.
