Volkswagen has implemented an unusual approach to managing vegetation on its solar farm located in Poznań, Poland. Instead of using traditional lawnmowers, the automaker introduced a flock of approximately 100 sheep to graze among the photovoltaic panels.
This initiative goes beyond a simple ecological marketing strategy, as the flock is part of a scientific study focused on agrivoltaics. This concept involves combining solar energy production with agricultural or livestock practices in the same physical space, aiming to optimize the use of the area covered by the panels and analyze the impacts of this shared land use.
The work is being conducted by the University of Life Sciences in Poznań. Scientists are investigating how grazing affects various factors, including animal welfare, biodiversity, soil quality, surrounding vegetation, and the microclimate of the solar farm.
In practice, the sheep help control grass growth, eliminating the need for combustion-powered machinery or frequent mechanical maintenance. In solar installations, excessive vegetation can obstruct access to equipment, increase operational costs, and, depending on the terrain layout, cause shading on the structures.
Marzena Pillich-Grońska, director of Volkswagen Poznań, highlighted that the project demonstrates the industry's ability to unite energy generation, scientific research, and environmental conservation in a single area. According to her, the photovoltaic farm has become a support for biodiversity, local agriculture, and science, offering more than just clean energy.
The solar farm was built by Quanta Energy, a company that also provided videos showing the animals freely grazing in the area designated for energy generation that powers the automaker's unit. Agrivoltaics has attracted great interest in the energy sector by allowing a single piece of land to perform multiple functions. Thus, instead of dedicating vast areas solely to solar panels, companies and researchers are seeking methods to reconcile electricity production with food cultivation, livestock farming, or environmental preservation.
In the specific context of Volkswagen, the use of sheep adds a practical dimension to the experiment, reducing the demand for mechanical mowing and transforming the plant into an open laboratory. For the automaker, this project reinforces its commitment to linking its industrial activities to solutions that generate a lower environmental impact.
