The restructuring implemented by Microsoft in the Xbox division could drastically alter the future of Obsidian Entertainment. According to journalist Jason Schreier from Bloomberg, the studio is reportedly opting to pause development on Avowed 2 to redirect its efforts toward a new game belonging to the Fallout franchise.
Strategic Changes at Obsidian
Originally, the Avowed sequel was progressing positively and had the potential for release the following year. However, this project does not align with the strategy defined by the new CEO of the Xbox division, Asha Sharma, which aims to centralize investments in franchises considered more important for the brand's future.
Status of Avowed 2 and New Fallout
Schreier reported that a reduced team will maintain work on concepts related to Avowed 2, preserving the material in case Microsoft decides to resume the project later. The journalist cited sources close to the development, stating that the project did not fit into Asha Sharma's overall strategy. This news comes shortly after Microsoft carried out a new wave of layoffs, affecting approximately 25% of Obsidian Entertainment's employees, according to reports from staff and specialized outlets.
Fallout Project Leadership
According to the report, Josh Sawyer, Obsidian's design director and a key figure in Fallout: New Vegas, will take charge of the new title set in the Fallout universe. Prior to the strategic change, Sawyer was responsible for an unreleased RPG that shared structural and thematic similarities with Fallout but belonged to an original intellectual property and was also canceled during the reorganization.
Other Projects Remain Active
Despite the recent cuts, Obsidian will continue dedicating work to some of its main titles. The studio continues to develop new content for The Outer Worlds 2 and Grounded 2, including updates and DLCs planned for both games. It was not specified which other internal projects were terminated during the restructuring process.
Official Company Stance
As of now, neither Microsoft nor Obsidian has issued official statements regarding the information disclosed by Bloomberg. Although Jason Schreier is recognized as a highly reliable source in the gaming industry, the details presented are considered rumors, as the company has not yet confirmed the cancellation of Avowed 2 or the development of the new Fallout. If the information is confirmed, this decision would reinforce Xbox's recent trend of concentrating its resources on established franchises, especially after the wave of layoffs and cancellations that recently affected several companies within the company.
