Karolina Muchova from the Czech Republic defeated American Coco Gauff in the women's singles semi-final of the 2026 Wimbledon tournament. The match took place on Thursday, the eleventh day of the championship, and ended with Muchova's triumph.
Semi-final Match Progression
The Czech tennis player, ranked 10th, managed to save match point to reach her first Wimbledon final. The victory was achieved in three sets after a thrilling confrontation against Coco Gauff. The match score was 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 (12/10). The game lasted two hours and thirty-five minutes under hot conditions on Centre Court.
In the final, Muchova will face either Czech ninth seed Linda Noskova or Ukrainian twelfth seed Marta Kostyuk, who will play in the other semi-final later that same Thursday.
Return and Achievements
Muchova now advances to the second Grand Slam final, which is her first such final since reaching the French Open final in 2023. In her first Wimbledon semi-final, Muchova managed to overcome negative memories of previous unsuccessful performances in Southwest London. Previously, she had lost in the first round in four attempts to participate in Wimbledon.
Despite Gauff winning six of the seven previous encounters with Muchova, the Czech won their last clash in Stuttgart this year, once again surpassing the two-time Grand Slam champion.
Comments and Health Issues
After the match, Muchova noted: 'It is very nice to be in the final. It was such a big fight. You are constantly wavering, you don't have time to think, but it was very nervous.'
After battling injuries at the beginning of her career, Muchova is finally realizing her potential, although she herself is surprised by her success at Wimbledon over the past two weeks.
To combat grass allergies, Muchova takes 'pills, sprays, eye drops,' but she no longer dislikes playing on the English club's lawns.
Tense Final
Muchova is finally competing without restrictions after numerous injuries sustained over the past years, including issues with her right and left wrists, abdomen, back, thigh, ankle, and foot. In 2022, doctors advised her to completely quit tennis, and in 2023 and 2024, surgery on her right wrist forced her to be off the court for ten months.
Now she needs only one more victory to win her first Grand Slam title. Seeded seventh, Gauff has long struggled with serving during the tournament and has the highest number of double faults among female tour players this year. Muchova capitalized on this obvious weakness to break serve in the third game of the first set and again in the fifth.
The Czech closed the set with an ace, forcing Gauff to go to the locker room to calm down. Gauff committed 12 unforced errors in the first set, but by showing resilience, she responded with a dominant second set, which was drastically different from her shaky start. By improving her serve and playing with greater determination and intensity, she managed to break serve and take a 3-1 lead, decisively closing the set and forcing the match into a deciding set.
The final set became a tense battle where both athletes saved break points as the tension mounted, and Muchova seemed to feel an abdominal injury. This year, Muchova demonstrated flawless statistics in tie-breaks, and she maintained this form by hitting an amazing cross-court shot that even made Gauff applaud. Muchova was given a time-out for delaying the serve at 8-8, and this warning worried the Czech, who then sent a forehand far, giving Gauff match point. However, Gauff allowed Muchova to avoid defeat with a weak drop shot into the net. Muchova hit a magnificent lob over Gauff to earn match point, but she slipped near the net while the American hit a powerful shot past her. Undeterred, Muchova continued to pressure Gauff and ultimately secured the most memorable victory of her career.
