The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) is establishing a specialized facility in the state of Himachal Pradesh to address the unique health challenges faced by residents of the Himalayan region.
Opening of the Research Center
Union Health Minister J.P. Natta will lay the foundation stone for the ICMR High Altitude Medicine and Public Health Research Centre in Keylong, Lahaul and Spiti district, on July 11. This facility will transform the existing ICMR field station into a multidisciplinary research hub focused on diseases and health issues associated with life at high altitudes.
Scientific Areas of Work
Scientists working at the center will study altitude physiology and acclimatization, mountain medicine, climate-sensitive diseases, infectious and non-communicable diseases, maternal and child health, nutrition, mental health, occupational health, and disaster medicine. Furthermore, the institute will assess the impact of climate change on disease patterns and healthcare delivery in the fragile Himalayan ecosystems.
Goals and Collaboration
One of the main objectives of the center will be to develop healthcare solutions for remote mountain communities using telemedicine, digital health platforms, drone-based drug delivery and diagnostics, as well as real-time disease monitoring. Located in the strategically important border district of Lahaul and Spiti, the center will ensure year-round access for high-altitude and tribal populations, allowing for long-term studies on the effects of altitude, extreme weather conditions, and environmental changes on health.
Contribution to Policy and Development
Officials noted that the data gathered will help shape policies regarding indigenous health, disaster preparedness, and the creation of a climate-resilient healthcare system. The center plans to collaborate with the Armed Forces Medical Services, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the Government of Himachal Pradesh, as well as academic institutions in India and abroad to conduct research covering everything from high-altitude diseases to emergency response in mountainous terrain.
Significance for Indian Healthcare
According to health representatives, this institution will strengthen India's capacity in high-altitude biomedical research amidst new public health challenges created by climate change, tourism growth, and infrastructure expansion in the Himalayan region. The foundation stone ceremony will also include a scientific exhibition, the launch of the center's website, the release of a commemorative postal stamp, and the planting of local Himalayan saplings as part of the Green ICMR Campus initiative.
