The IT services company Cognizant intends to increase the number of 'frontier' level certified engineers to 5,000 and 'frontier' level business operators to 10,000, as the demand for these positions is sharply rising amid the accelerated adoption of AI in large enterprises.
Talent Development Plans
The company announced that the first group of engineers who have passed the 'frontier' level assessment and are ready for deployment will be presented in the fourth quarter. Furthermore, Cognizant plans to replenish its talent pool by annually hiring 'frontier' level specialists from American and global universities.
Specialist Requirements
CEO Ravi Kumar emphasized that overcoming the gap in AI outcomes requires specialists who not only deeply understand the client's industry but are also capable of rethinking the work structure and taking full responsibility for achieving results in collaboration with clients, regardless of the model or cloud platform they choose.
Role of Frontier Engineers
The term 'Frontier Deployed Engineer' (FDE), popularized by the data analytics company Palantir, refers to software engineers who integrate directly into the client's ecosystem. Their task is to configure the technology company's software to solve client problems.
These specialists differ from traditional enterprise architects; they work within the client's environment to facilitate the adoption of AI platforms, bring deep industry expertise to define solution building opportunities within the client's technology stack, link business goals to technical implementation, and develop solutions using proven assets and templates.
Cognizant's Model Principles
The 'frontier' model at Cognizant is based on six key principles: multidisciplinary competence; direct link to client value; routine creation, deployment, or collaboration with agents; full accountability; service delivery through a small operational group; and a single, unified Cognizant experience for the client.
Market Demand Dynamics
According to TeamLease Digital, demand is growing at high double-digit rates. In the first quarter of 2025 alone, the need for FDE increased by almost 800 percent, although this was based on a small base, demonstrating the critical importance of this role. Globally, there are approximately 500–800 active vacancies simultaneously, with India serving as a developing hub with 250–270 open positions.
