New film by Nika Mudli about corruption and survival to premiere in Johannesburg

Nikal Mudli, known by the pseudonym Nick Hale, 26 years old, is preparing for the release of his latest film titled 'Good Wh*res And Bad Laws'. This project embodies the childhood passion of the director and producer from Johannesburg.

Plot and Genre of the Film

The film is set in an anti-utopian version of Johannesburg, where the digital age has collapsed. It tells the story of two corrupt police officers who arrive at a brothel after completing a high-risk assignment. Mudli describes the work as a neo-noir crime thriller with elements of action and social commentary.

He explained that a confrontation occurs in the brothel, triggered by a mysterious briefcase, leading to a brutal struggle between sex industry workers, criminals, and corrupt law enforcement officials. As alliances shift and trust erodes, each character must decide how far they are willing to go for survival.

Thematic Content and Inspiration

The film explores how inequality, despair, and corruption can blur the line between good and evil. It poses a question to the audience: are people merely products of the systems they live in, and can humanity exist when survival becomes the highest priority? Mudli, founder of Hail Stonez Studios, oversaw the development of the film from concept to completion.

He wrote the script in 2024, and filming was scheduled for October of the same year. The shooting process took three days and took place entirely in Johannesburg, including locations in Sandton, Melville, and Sophiatown. Mudli emphasized that he wanted Johannesburg to be part of the story because these places reflect different facets of the city, helping to create a believable dystopian world while celebrating the city's unique atmosphere and visual identity.

Visual and Personal Motives

Mudli has always been intrigued by stories touching upon morality and the gray areas between right and wrong. Instead of creating traditional heroes and villains, he aimed to tell a story where every character is forced to make impossible decisions in a broken world. From a cinematic perspective, he drew inspiration from directors such as Quentin Tarantino, Guy Ritchie, and Martin Scorsese, whose dialogue and character dynamics are iconic, as well as from the atmospheric world-building of films like 'Blade Runner.'

At the same time, he wanted to retain a distinct South African flavor, basing the plot in Johannesburg and exploring themes relevant to the local population, while maintaining a connection with the international audience. On a personal level, the film also symbolizes resilience. Mudli noted that after losing his brother, he decided to pursue filmmaking with an even greater sense of purpose, and completing the film became proof to himself that difficult circumstances should not define one's future.

Production and Premiere

The film features a distinguished South African cast, including Llewellyn Cordier, Nnekwu Tsajwa, Caitlin Henning, Bianca Russell, and Mvaka Mugalu, whose performances brought these complex characters to life. Mudli shared that independent cinema is always fraught with difficulties, with funding being the biggest obstacle. After nearly two years of trying to secure financial support, he decided to invest his own savings in the project.

During production, the team also faced pressure from a tight schedule, but thanks to the incredibly dedicated actors and crew, the film was successfully completed. Mudli recalls repeating the mantra during this period: 'When you ask for rain, be ready for mud.' The film will premiere on July 24th at The Bioscope cinema in Johannesburg. Following this exclusive premiere, the film will begin its campaign at various international film festivals.

Political pressure and acting performance

Attempts to label Jaswant an 'anti-national' for revealing facts about the brutality of the Punjab Police in Canada and abroad, and presenting his mission, stemming from a sense of humanity, as a 'conspiracy to defame Punjab', demonstrate the audacity of the Punjab Police, which exacerbates the difficulties of the external CBI. These moments make this 30-year-old story relevant today.

It must be noted the brilliant talent of Diljit Dosanjh, whose performance in 'Satluj' will have a strong emotional impact. As Jaswant, he demonstrates the courage to fight despite the lack of support, which is the best work of his career. His seriousness, restraint, and naturalness in expressing emotions give the film power. The scene with the character Kuljith is particularly memorable.

Suvinder Vicky and Arjun Rampal, who played the roles of father and son in 'Dhurandhar', also performed excellently in their scenes. If this film had been released about five years ago, their contribution would have been even more significant. Their conflict scenes make the film very tense. Technical perfection and finale

'Satluj' is also technically flawless. The cinematography portrays Punjab in a way that is rarely seen. Light, sound, background music, and makeup create an experience that constantly presses on the consciousness in accordance with the narrative, tone, and mood. When I first read the story of Jaswant's fight against this crime by the Punjab Police, it kept me awake for weeks: how can a person become so cruel as not to feel the slightest sympathy for another person? And how can such passion and courage arise in a person to raise their head for the truth amidst such cruelty?

It is interesting that Diljit's recent work 'Main Vaapas Aunga' touched upon the pain of Punjab, which many residents of other parts of India do not understand. This time, Diljit became the face of the pain of Punjab that few people know about. Director Hani Trehan deserves great recognition and love for this film.
