The Chairman of the Customs Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Akmal Mavlonov, held an official meeting with the Director-General of the World Customs Organization (WCO), Ian Saunders, in Brussels.
Discussion of Reforms and Cooperation
During the negotiations, the parties reviewed the large-scale structural changes implemented in Uzbekistan's customs system and discussed the current digital transformation of this agency. Priority areas for long-term multilateral cooperation were outlined. The Permanent Representative of Uzbekistan, Laziz Atoev, also participated in the discussion.
Diplomatic Representation
A key agenda item was the establishment of an office for the official representative of the Customs Committee—a customs attaché at the Embassy of the Republic of Uzbekistan in Belgium. Ian Saunders and Akmal Mavlonov highly praised this step, emphasizing that having a permanent diplomat would allow Tashkent to significantly strengthen its participation in key WCO programs, more effectively promote national and regional initiatives, and promptly coordinate joint projects. The diplomatic presence in Brussels is intended to bring Uzbekistan's integration into global customs processes to a new level.
Personnel Development and Technology
The parties paid special attention to institutional development and staff training. It was noted that specialized seminars, training sessions, and expert diagnostic missions organized with WCO support contribute significantly to the continuous professional development of Uzbek specialists. An example of a recent professional success of an employee of the Customs Committee of Uzbekistan, N. Kurbanov, who successfully passed selection and received the status of a WCO international expert on efficiency measurement mechanisms, was also presented.
Infrastructure Modernization
As part of the presentation of technological potential, the Uzbek delegation provided the WCO leadership with detailed information about the large-scale modernization of border infrastructure. Specifically, the delegation demonstrated the comprehensive implementation of digital technologies, automated declaration systems, and intelligent solutions in the daily operations of the republic's border customs posts.
Partnership Prospects
At the conclusion of the meeting, the parties confirmed their mutual interest in deepening partnership relations, focusing future efforts on expanding information exchange channels, improving national risk management systems, and developing analytical tools.
