More than 52,000 crowdfunding campaigns have been launched on the BackaBuddy platform since the beginning of this year, with medical needs continuing to hold leading positions. This is due to South Africans increasingly turning to online fundraising amid growing financial pressure.
Fundraising Statistics and Trends
According to BackaBuddy data, 52,509 campaigns were created on the platform in the first six months of 2026, representing a noticeable increase compared to the same period last year. Simbule Jezile, a representative of BackaBuddy and Head of Campaigns, noted that health and medical categories remain one of the strongest on the platform.
Many of these initiatives are initiated by families and communities to cover costs for treatment, surgeries, rehabilitation, acquisition of assistive devices, and other healthcare needs.
Reasons for the Rise in Crowdfunding
Jezile explained to IOL that the increase in campaigns in 2026 is due to a combination of changes on the platform itself and general economic factors. BackaBuddy's transition to a zero-commission model for using the platform has simplified the fundraising process for individuals, families, charities, and communities, ensuring that most donations go towards the stated goal.
Furthermore, Jezile emphasized that more South Africans are using crowdfunding because traditional social support systems are under strain. He added that there is high demand for fundraising for medical care, assistance for students facing debt or registration fees, as well as for supporting local community needs and event participants through peer-to-peer crowdfunding.
The Evolution of Crowdfunding
According to Jezile, crowdfunding has moved beyond solely reacting to major crises. It is now a practical tool for the daily lives of South Africans, allowing them to respond quickly to urgent needs, provide mutual support, and mobilize their communities.
Examples of Successful Campaigns
Among the most successful campaigns this year in terms of funds raised is the Olive stem cell transplant fund, which exceeded R1.7 million. Simultaneously, the fundraiser for Sergeant Carl Sanders became one of the most discussed and quickly funded campaigns. Jezile explained that the campaign received wide support due to coverage in local media and active dissemination on social networks, as well as because it was a relatable, community-supported story that people could react to quickly and directly.
Campaign Verification Process
BackaBuddy declined to disclose the number of rejected campaigns during the reporting period but stated that all of them undergo standard verification procedures. Jezile clarified that campaigns are assessed according to the platform's Terms and Conditions and standards. A campaign may be rejected, audited, restricted, or removed if it does not meet the platform's usage requirements, including verification, compliance, donor protection, and platform integrity standards.
