Sony has announced that it will cease manufacturing disc versions for future PlayStation platform games starting in January 2028. After this date, all new releases will be exclusively available in digital format, either through the PlayStation Store or other retailers.
Titles released before this deadline will maintain their availability on physical media. Sony itself, in an official statement, justified this change as a natural move for Sony Interactive Entertainment to keep pace with changing consumption habits, given that the preference for digital media is considerably higher than that for physical discs.
Trends in the Gaming Industry
This announcement follows a trend observed across the entire entertainment sector. A recent example of this was Rockstar's release of GTA 6, which will not have a disc version; the 'physical' edition in stores will only contain the code necessary for download. It is important to note that this title will first arrive on Xbox and PlayStation consoles, with no release date scheduled for PCs.
Exclusive Focus on the PlayStation Ecosystem
Furthermore, Sony will likely stop releasing its single-player games for personal computers. The company's main titles will be directed solely to the PlayStation 5 line or any subsequent consoles from the brand.
This decision has provoked reactions. Shawn Layden, former PlayStation leader, criticized this distancing by the company from the PC market. In a conversation with the French portal PSI, the executive argued that the purpose of bringing PlayStation exclusives to the computer has always been to expand the reach of franchises and attract new users to the brand's universe, and not merely to increase profits.
