The German automotive concern Volkswagen is facing pressure from worker protests regarding proposals for extensive restructuring. According to The Guardian, this plan potentially affects up to four production facilities in Germany and risks significant job cuts.
Restructuring Plans and Protests
The restructuring proposal was prepared by the team of Volkswagen CEO Oliver Blume and was first presented to the supervisory board on Thursday. The trade union IG Metall organized demonstrations that took place at the company's headquarters, as well as at the Audi, Porsche, and MAN truck and bus manufacturer plants.
Threat of Plant Closures
German facilities in Hanover, Emden, Zwickau, and the Audi plant in Neckarsulm are under threat of liquidation. These plans are expected to provoke strong opposition from local authorities and trade unions, which could lead to strikes.
International Cooperation
Earlier, in June, Germany and Uzbekistan reached an agreement to establish Volkswagen car assembly in Tashkent. This cooperation aims to strengthen bilateral ties and increase German investments to the volume of $2 billion.
