The first season of the series 'The Makhenes' concluded on July 5th, leaving viewers with a sense of raw honesty and deep immersion into the life of the Makhene family, which generated a strong response from the audience.
The Path to Openness and Healing
Over thirteen weeks, the series allowed viewers to see the family's life in its most authentic form, addressing themes of addiction, mental health, motherhood, healing, and complex family relationships. Throughout this process, the family consciously chose vulnerability, responsibility, and unfiltered truth at every stage.
At the center of the story was actress, musician, and spiritual healer Letoya Makhene. She recently shared stories about recovering her life after public scrutiny, how she manages motherhood, rebuilds family ties, and learns to choose herself again.
Family Stories and Audience Reaction
Her companions in the series were her father Blondie Makhene, grandmother Ouma Lily, as well as sisters Pauline and Gontse, whose own stories added depth to the family's journey.
Commenting on the season finale, the actress noted that she did not expect such a large response from the public. She stated: 'The response was incredible. The show touched so many people, and I received countless messages from viewers who see themselves and their families in our story. Knowing that our journey resonated with others was very special.'
Emotional Moments and Authenticity
The series demonstrated the depth of her relationship with her children. According to the 41-year-old mother of four, one of the most difficult moments was reliving a therapy session with her children, which she called one of the most emotional events of the season.
She recounted: 'Watching the scene where we were in therapy with the children was incredibly hard. It was an emotional moment for all of us. We were completely engaged, and what the viewers saw was absolutely authentic.'
Throughout the show, Letoya preferred authenticity over hiding behind an idealized image, despite knowing that some moments might make her more vulnerable. She recalled: 'There were many moments that made me feel vulnerable, but I knew that if I was going to do it, I had to be completely honest. There is no point in telling a story if I am hiding behind a version of myself that isn't real.'
Confrontation and Life Lessons
Furthermore, the filming created conditions for her immediate family to confront issues they had avoided for years, including difficult conversations that led to decisions either to stay together or to part ways.
Looking back, Letoya believes this experience reminded her that healing begins with honesty, setting boundaries, grace, and learning to put oneself first, adding that it made her stronger.
Regrets and New Principles
Along with the lessons learned, there were also regrets. The former actress from 'Generations: The Legacy' shared a wish that her younger self would understand much sooner that protecting one's peace is just as important as loving others. She advised herself: 'I would tell her to change her heart, even a little. Not everyone has your heart, so don't trust and love the world with all your heart. Leave some love for yourself. Be comfortable with your boundaries and let the consequences happen when the people you love violate them. If they leave, it's okay. If they stay, let them stay, knowing they must become better.'
She emphasized that one of the most important lessons she wished to impart to her younger self was never to lose herself in the pursuit of love. Instead, she believes that choosing oneself, setting boundaries, and strengthening one's connection with God ultimately leads to a sense of wholeness.
Upon concluding the first season, she said that she is most proud of showing the audience who she truly is, flaws included. 'I am most proud of presenting my authentic self. I didn't pretend to know all the answers or try to be perfect. I shared my truth, and if it helped even one person feel less alone, then it was worth it.'
