Scotland has been strengthened by the return of fly-half Finn Russell, who will once again take his place at number 10 before the decisive Nations Championship match against the Springboks, scheduled for Saturday in Pretoria.
Changes to the Starting Lineup
Russell, who is preparing to play his 95th test match, is one of three changes in the starting fifteen-man squad that defeated Argentina in Buenos Aires last week. Head coach Gregor Townsend decided to bring back his main playmaker for one of the toughest confrontations of the year.
The Scots have also included nine players from Glasgow Warriors in the bench. The visitors, led by inside centre Sionet Tuipulutu, aim to overcome the strong Springboks team.
Coach's Tactical Decisions
Townsend also selected all three defenders from Glasgow Warriors: Kyle Stein and Jamie Dobie on the wings, and Kyle Row at fullback, hoping to continue the success after the first-round victory. To counter the renowned 'Bomb Squad' of the Springboks, Scotland decided to use a six-foot split in the bench in favour of forwards.
British and Irish Lions prop Rory Sutherland could earn his 50th test cap if he comes off the bench. Townsend surprised by not selecting a recognized reserve scrum-half.
Squad and Substitutions
Hooker Gregor Hiddleston retains his spot among the reserves after an impressive debut in last week's test match, and lock Alex Samuel also remains on the bench after his impact from the sidelines. Fly-half Tom Jordan drops into the reserves after playing in the match against the Pumas. Will Hurd, Josh Bayliss, Magnus Bradbury, and reserve Stafford McDowell are ready to make their first appearances in the 2026 Nations Championship, being included in the 23-man list for match day.
Scotland is banking on Russell's experience and his ability to control the game to achieve the famous victory over the world champions, aiming to make a significant impression in Pretoria in their first match in South Africa since 2014.
