The procession of Lord Jagannath's chariots in Puri, Odisha, is soon to take place. On this day, Lord Jagannath travels to the house of Goddess Gundicha. This procession holds immense significance not only for the culture of Odisha but also for all of India, uniting the Rath Yatra community.
Significance of the Chariot Ropes
In this journey, although the images of the deities and the chariots themselves hold great importance, special reverence is given to the ropes used to pull the chariots. Touching these ropes gives the feeling that one has touched God Himself.
Legend of Jagannath's Ropes
The ropes of Lord Jagannath's chariots are known by various special names. Specifically, the rope of Lord Jagannath's chariot is called Shankhachud. There is a legend from Puri according to which a demon named Shankhachud tried to kidnap Lord Jagannath, deeming His image incomplete. His goal was to undermine people's faith in their God. However, upon seeing such an act against his younger brother, Lord Balabhadra became enraged and destroyed Shankhachud.
According to folk beliefs, Shankhachud requested permission from the Lord to remain in service. Then Balarama created the rope from his crown, nerves, and spinal cords. Since then, this rope has been used to tow Lord Jagannath's chariot.
Shankhachud and Astrology
Despite being a demon, Shankhachud attained purity by achieving liberation. The rope named in his honor is a symbol of liberation. The process of pulling the rope symbolizes the devotion and piety of the believers. There is another story about the demon Shankhachud: he was a friend of the Asura Jalandhara, who opposed Lord Shiva. Shankhachud possessed the Kharikavacha, and with it, he helped Jalandhara. Lord Vishnu, taking the form of a Brahmin, demanded this armor. After this, Shiva killed Shankhachud. Then Lord Vishnu blessed Shankhachud so that he could be useful in Kali Yuga and attain his devotion. This is why His chariot rope is called Shankhachud.
Similarly, in astrology, there is an affliction called Kalasarp Dosh Shankhachud. This affliction arises when all planets are located between Rahu and Ketu in the natal chart. This affliction can bring many obstacles and difficulties into a person's adult life, especially in the spheres of destiny, education, and relationships. It is believed that touching the rope of the chariot procession helps to get rid of this affliction.
Balabhadra's Chariot Rope
The rope of Lord Balabhadra's chariot is called Vasuki (Basuki). Vasuki is the necklace of Lord Shiva. According to mythological tales, Vasuki is the younger brother of Shesha and Ananta Nagas. It is said that once Vasuki came to his brother Shesha Naga and said that no example was equal to the one he presented as a younger brother, but he never had the opportunity to serve him as a younger brother.
Then Shesha Naga replied: 'Do not worry, when I come into this world as Baldau Balabhadra, Narayana's elder brother, you will surely serve me.' Thus, Vasuki became the rope of Lord Jagannath's chariot for Balabhadra, and believers consider it their fortune to pull this rope.
Subhadra Devi's Chariot Rope
The rope of Subhadra Devi's chariot is called Swarnachud. This rope represents the shackles of illusion and the snare of attachment. Through this rope, a person becomes bound and caught between karma, relationships, and the knots of their destiny. The rope of Goddess Subhadra's chariot symbolizes the union of the soul with Paramatma.
