Home Minister Amit Shah directed that the operational standards of all 62 major airports in the country be brought into compliance within two years. These airports include 21 facilities currently under construction and 41 prioritized for development based on passenger traffic.
Improving Passenger Convenience
During a meeting reviewing immigration systems, security measures, and passenger amenities at major airports, Shah asked the Ministry of Civil Aviation, represented by Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu, to develop norms regarding the number of jet bridges in all airports, considering both passenger flow and air traffic. He also required the expansion of the baggage drop service, currently available at 16 major airports, to other international airports with high passenger volumes.
Automation and Reducing Delays
Furthermore, Shah proposed the phased implementation of an Automated Tray Return System (ARTS) with X-ray inspection in all airports across the country to reduce staffing costs. He recommended that the ministry and the CISF commission conduct independent third-party studies during peak tourist season to assess and minimize passenger delays at all checkpoints in major airports.
Immigration and Visa Issues
Regarding visa compliance and immigration matters, Shah mandated the commissioning of Regional Foreigners Registration Office (FRRO) offices in all state capitals by 2027. Currently, FRRO offices operate in only a dozen locations, with the district SP handling FRRO functions elsewhere. Shah also ordered the prompt establishment of authorized immigration checkpoints at Agartala and Jiwar airports.
Expedited Clearance Program
To promote the 'Fast Track Immigration - Trusted Travellers' Programme' (FTI-TTP), which allows pre-approved passengers to pass through automated e-gates with biometric identification in partnership with airlines, the Home Minister stated the need to create a mechanism enabling airlines to send invitations to passengers via WhatsApp at the time of booking an international ticket for registration in FTI-TTP.
