Almada City Council decrees state of alert and announces total water supply cut in fifteen localities

Restrictions imposed by the state of alert

Residents in various localities of the municipality have reported recurring failures in water supply, with greater frequency in the Costa da Caparica. In response, the contingency plan of the Municipal Water and Sanitation Services (SMAS) of Almada was activated on Monday, and a crisis cabinet was established. With the state of alert in effect, the use of public network water for any purpose other than domestic or essential is strictly prohibited.

Prohibitions include activities such as washing vehicles, irrigating public or private gardens and golf courses, filling pools, using showers and foot baths in bathing areas, operating ornamental fountains, artificial lakes, and other aesthetic water features, as well as washing external surfaces, roads, walls, and roofs, encompassing all recreational or non-essential uses.

Operational reinforcement and service guarantee

The Almada City Council ordered the immediate reinforcement of procedures, such as monitoring the supply system and reservoir levels. Technical teams were also intensified to carry out urgent detection and repair of leaks and ruptures, as well as increasing inspection teams to curb waste, illegal use, and excessive water consumption.

The municipality guarantees that the supply will continue to be ensured for crucial equipment and services, such as hospitals, health centers, nursing homes, fire departments, and other essential infrastructures. Furthermore, alternative supply means, including tanker trucks, will be made available whenever necessary in certain regions. Finally, it was decided to strengthen coordination with neighboring municipalities and other competent entities to optimize response capacity.

The local authority expressed regret for the inconvenience caused to families, businesses, and institutions, acknowledging the disruption, and thanked the residents of Almada for their cooperation.
