Ana Paula Martins stated that it is impossible to guarantee a calm summer in the healthcare sector, noting that no summer in this field can be called without problems. Speaking at the opening of the new Family Medical Unit (USF) in Alpiarça, the minister emphasized that summer is an 'especially tense period for the National Health Service (SNS)'.
Summer Season Challenges in Healthcare
According to her, structural staff shortages are compounded by specialists taking leave. The minister pointed out that maintaining full-capacity emergency services would require doubling the staff, which, in her opinion, does not exist and will not happen. She added that if a doctor suddenly falls ill or has family issues preventing them from coming in, the schedule is disrupted, and sometimes a replacement cannot be found.
