CSIR-National Aerospace Laboratories (CSIR-NAL), India's leading aerospace research agency, has completed the design phase of the 19-seater light transport aircraft Saras MkII, marking a significant step toward creating the country's first domestically designed aircraft.
Significance of the Development for Aviation
Minister of Space, Science and Technology, Jitendra Singh, announced this achievement in an X post, calling it an important milestone for the development program of Indian aviation. Singh noted that the completion of the Saras MkII design phase at CSIR-NAL in Bangalore demonstrates India's growing capabilities in manufacturing its own aircraft.
Functionality and Project Goals
This light transport aircraft is intended to serve small airports and provide connectivity to remote areas of India. It has previously undergone wind tunnel testing and preliminary design of all systems. Singh emphasized that this achievement supports Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Atmanirbhar Bharat mission and accelerates the UDAN initiative, improving connectivity to hilly and remote regions using indigenous technology.
Future Development Prospects
Previously, the Ministry of Science and Technology stated that Saras MkII is just the beginning, as India needs to develop and build larger airframes in the long term to meet growing aviation demands. Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu congratulated NAL on the breakthrough, noting that it will strengthen the UDAN vision of connecting the most remote and high-altitude airfields with aircraft manufactured in India.
