Support for Manifest V2 (MV2) in Google Chrome will be completely terminated, which will impact the functionality of uBlock Origin and other extensions that rely on this standard.
The removal of MV2 extensions from the Chrome Web Store is scheduled for August 31, 2026. This milestone signals the end of extensions as they were known. Although uBlock Origin had already lost official compatibility with Chrome in 2024, it remained operational thanks to residual support for MV2.
According to information found in Chrome documentation by the website PiunikaWeb, the complete absence of MV2 in the Google browser will occur on this date, forcing the removal of all extensions based on this standard from the store.
With Chrome 151, expected at the end of July or beginning of August, MV2 support will be definitively eliminated, causing the classic version of uBlock Origin for Chrome to cease existing. MV2 extensions can only be used if they were installed before Chrome 138, but they will no longer be eligible for updates or reinstallation via the Chrome Web Store.
Ad blocker users have two main options. One is to migrate to uBlock Origin Lite, which operates under Manifest V3 (MV3), a successor considered faster and more secure, albeit with feature limitations. The other alternative is to switch to different browsers. uBlock Origin continues to function on Firefox, as the Mozilla browser still supports MV2. For those who prefer a Chromium base, Brave also maintains MV2 support, and Opera assured Tecnoblog that it will support uBlock Origin for as long as possible.
