The expansion of the Dubai Metro is being implemented using advanced engineering technologies. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) employs modern construction methods to increase the speed, accuracy, and efficiency of the work.
The latest methodologies are being introduced into tunneling works to support the emirate's growing transport network and meet future infrastructure needs. In a video published on Wednesday, the RTA demonstrated the underground construction process before the erection of a metro station.
Several months ago, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, inaugurated the tunnel boring works for the Dubai Metro Blue Line. On Wednesday, the RTA announced the completion of the first phase of these tunneling works.
The video also detailed the start of the tunneling process. In 2007, the RTA introduced its first tunnel boring machines, which was a significant engineering breakthrough at the time. The tunneling work lasted about seven months, with an average advance rate of 12 meters per day.
The RTA stated in the video that today's 'Al Ugeisha' machine marks a new era of development. This large machine is equipped with the most modern digital control and navigation systems, ensuring higher accuracy and efficiency. The machine achieved a record productivity of 30 meters per day, completing the first tunneling phase in just two months.
The 'Al Ugeisha' machine is 163 meters long, weighs over 2000 tons, and operates around the clock. Its average boring speed ranges from 13 to 17 meters per day.
The RTA added that in less than two decades, Dubai has doubled its capabilities, accelerated achievements, and set new standards in tunneling construction, emphasizing that the journey of the Blue Line has only just begun.
The 18 billion dirham Blue Line is scheduled to open on September 9, 2029, coinciding with the 20th anniversary of the Dubai Metro. The 30 km project includes 14 stations. Approximately half of the route will be underground, and the rest above ground.
RTA has announced the temporary closure of the road lane designated for buses and taxis at the Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall metro station. This closure will last until the end of 2026 and is necessary for infrastructure expansion works.
The Roads and Transport Authority of Dubai (RTA) has announced the temporary closure of the pedestrian bridge connecting the multi-level parking lot to the Centrepoint metro station. The closure is necessary to carry out construction work related to the upcoming Blue Line.
The Blue Line project is a 30 km route with 14 stations, including three interchange stations, seven elevated stations, and four underground stations. The project is planned to open on September 9, 2029, with a budget of 20.5 billion dirhams.
