The Shell Theatre, an open-air arena dating from the 2008 Olympic era, located on the central island of Chaoyang Park in Beijing, was recently renovated by the DUTS design office. This theatre is situated in an area surrounded by a lake on three of its sides.
The renovation project was developed in accordance with the master plan for the Liangma waterfront cultural zone. The approach adopted by DUTS design focused on a low-intervention strategy, specifically a '10% interface renovation.' This methodology allowed for avoiding the complete demolition of the structure, aiming to redefine the relationship of coexistence between the performance venue, the public park, and the surrounding waterfront landscape.
