Sony's decision to suspend the manufacturing of physical games for PlayStation, scheduled to begin in 2028, has provoked an intense reaction among players. Just days after the announcement, the company's first social media post was flooded with criticism, signaling a growing protest from the community against the brand.
Social Media Protests
One specific post, regarding the FlexStrike arcade controller, garnered over 65 thousand responses and surpassed 25 million views in just a few days, a performance significantly higher than the usual engagement of the official PlayStation profile. Instead of focusing on the new accessory, thousands of users used the comments to express dissatisfaction with Sony's choice to abandon support for physical media.
Community Criticism and Reactions
User messages ranged from requests for the company to reconsider the measure to harsher criticisms of the strategy of giving exclusive preference to the digital market. This contrast is notable when compared to a previous post about the same FlexStrike, made at the end of June, which received only a few hundred responses.
Discussion Spreads to Other Platforms
Although the highest volume of comments was observed on X (formerly Twitter), similar manifestations were also recorded on Facebook, Instagram, Bluesky, and YouTube. Reports indicate that almost all recent PlayStation posts have begun receiving comments related to the end of physical discs, regardless of the topic addressed.
Involvement of Other Companies
The repercussion even attracted the attention of other companies. In a widely shared interaction, Domino's Pizza responded to Sony's post with the question: 'Did someone order a digital pizza?', a joke that quickly went viral and accumulated hundreds of thousands of interactions, becoming a central topic of the controversy.
Sony's Current Stance
To date, Sony has not issued an official response to the criticism nor commented on the social media backlash. Analysts suggest that if the company wishes to clarify its strategy or revise part of the decision, this process may take several weeks. In past cases, such as the attempt to discontinue the PS Store on PS3 and PS Vita, the company took approximately three weeks to reverse the situation following negative community reaction.
Meanwhile, the manufacturer maintains the original decision: new titles released for PlayStation starting in January 2028 will no longer be produced in physical media, marking one of the biggest transformations in the platform's history.
