The Ministry of Justice of Uzbekistan has officially registered Kokand Halva as a geographical indication and entered it into a special state register, according to the press service of the Intellectual Property Agency.
Historical Significance of the Product
The Agency noted that Kokand has been one of the centers of craftsmanship and national confectionery art since ancient times. It was here that the tradition of preparing Kokand Halva was formed, which gained recognition due to its unique production technologies, taste qualities, and other distinctive characteristics.
Goals of Registration
The registration of this geographical indication will ensure legal protection for the product's name and its traditional production technology. Furthermore, it will help preserve the unique features of the halva and strengthen quality guarantees.
According to the Intellectual Property Agency, this registration is also aimed at preserving the gastronomic heritage of the Fergana region, developing a regional national brand, and promoting this brand on the international stage. A geographical indication is defined as an intellectual property object that confirms the link between the special properties of a product and a specific territory, its natural conditions, historical traditions, and human factor.
