Union Minister of Transport Nitin Gadkari commented in detail for the first time on the issues surrounding the ethanol blending policy. In a special interview with India Today TV, he defended this government initiative.
Position on Shareholding
Gadkari stated that his share in ethanol production is only 0.07 percent, which eliminates any personal benefit for him. He called the accusations against him part of some conspiracy.
He emphasized that claims of private interests in the ethanol blending program are completely false. The minister clarified that the family sugar business belonged to him even before the introduction of the state policy on ethanol and reiterated that his share in ethanol production is extremely small, which cannot bring him significant financial gain.
Responses to E20 Criticism
The minister also categorically rejected criticism directed at E20 gasoline. He noted that so far, no one has been able to provide evidence that E20 fuel has caused any damage to a gasoline car. At the same time, he called on critics to publicly present any convincing evidence they possess.
Decision-Making Process
Explaining the policy development process, Gadkari stressed that the decision to blend ethanol was not made by one person. According to him, the final decision was reached after long discussions with the Ministry of Petroleum, the Central Cabinet, and scientific institutions, so it is incorrect to link this policy to the wishes of one individual.
Goals of Government Policy
During the conversation, the transport minister spoke about several important goals behind this policy. The main one is reducing the country's dependence on gasoline. Furthermore, a significant reduction in pollution is expected due to decreased crude oil imports. This will also directly benefit farmers, who will be able to earn higher income from crops such as sugarcane compared to previous periods. The government has long been working to promote clean fuel, and this program is part of those efforts.
Allegations of Slander
Finally, Nitin Gadkari stated that all accusations leveled against him are unfounded. He believes that some people are deliberately spreading false information to question the ethanol policy, viewing it as an attempt to distract from the main issue. He confirmed that the government's main focus is on ensuring the country's energy security and increasing farmers' incomes.
